(At the time of writing this)Social media has nearly 3.5 billion active users, plus a new account is created every 6.4 seconds. The average user has 7.6 social media accounts. Every day, they spend around 142 minutes on social media. Hence, social media exposure should be taken seriously if you own a business.

1) Embrace your uniqueness

It’s because people are interested in what you do and who you are that they want to follow your business. With social media, you can build relationships and connect with your customers, so treat them like you would in person.

On social media, why would you shout endlessly about why someone should buy your products? Let your followers know what’s going on in your industry, what your company is up to, and who the people behind the logo are.

2) Manage it as if it were any other part of your business

Social media is now just as important as advertising, marketing, and accounts. If you wouldn’t put a graduate intern in charge of your advertising budget or payroll, then why are you doing it for social media?

You want your social media exposure to reflect who you are and what you do, so you want someone who knows the business inside and out behind it.

Social media requires the ability to answer questions, engage in relevant, topical conversations, and have the confidence to speak about every aspect of your business, so you need people behind it who can cover all those bases.

3) Do what works for you

You don’t have to be on all social media channels! It will take a lot of time to manage Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Snapchat, and TikTok, and not all of them will be helpful to your business.

Businesses that rely on visuals can benefit from Pinterest and Instagram; fashion brands, estate agents and restaurants can generate likes with some well-lit photography, but the time investment might not be worth it.

Getting your name out there by word-of-mouth could be more effective with Facebook if you work as a mechanic or animal feed salesperson.

Check out what platforms your competitors are using and what works for them. Rather than having a bad social media presence, it’s better not to have one at all.

4) Encourage everyone to participate

Because social media exposure can be a time-consuming process, everyone in the company should be involved in it, unless you’ve hired someone specifically to handle it.

As long as everyone contributes, you’ll get regular updates and relevant content every day. Consider posting updates from the office, photos from employees on the road, video clips from meetings, and discussions from different people based on their expertise on topics that are relevant to your audience.

5) What you sow is what you reap

You get out of social media what you put into it, just as you do with many other things in life. If you only post once every six weeks on X (formerly known as Twitter), then you won’t grow your followers, and you won’t see any benefits for your business.

Essentially, all you have to do is post interesting, engaging, relevant content on a regular basis to reap the benefits of social media exposure, this in turn will improve website traffic and hopefully convert to sales.

6) Videos and images

Social media is all about images and videos. Tweets with images receive 20% more clicks, 90% more likes, and 150% more retweets.

Images and videos provide eye-catching content, which is essential in this day and age when people scroll through their timelines so quickly. Why read a tweet when you can look at a picture instead?

7) Take advantage of wider opportunities

Twitter isn’t just about sharing what you’re up to or promoting your products. Consumers use it for recommendations, journalists use it for finding stories, and people build friendships through short conversations.

Participate in conversations relevant to your business, participate in Twitter discussions, and follow journalists who cover your sector to see if they have media opportunities for comments or features you could use.

8) How do you plan to achieve your goals?

Sit down and figure out what your goals are before you start using social media, for example, are you looking for more direct phone leads?.

Focus on a smaller audience who are relevant to your business instead of building a large following of irrelevant accounts.

It will be much easier for everyone involved if you decide how you will use your channel to improve your social media exposure. If someone makes a negative comment, how would you like to respond?

How will you handle customer service inquiries? Would you like to run competitions on your channels? Do you have an image bank that you can use to promote your brand? Do you plan to use a scheduling service?

Make sure you know how your business appears on social media before launching your channels.

9) Pay attention to your customers

Your social media channels will have a customer service aspects to them, especially if you provide a product or service directly to the public. The most important thing is to know how you are going to respond to customer service comments.

The majority of interactions will likely be positive, which is fantastic for your business along with your SEO. However, any negativity must also be handled in a sensible manner.

It is significant to let customers know that their concerns have been heard, and then take the issue off social media by providing a phone number or email address or continue in a direct message.

In most cases, people just want to know they have been heard and that their opinions have been considered, so in turn, even negative interactions boost your social media exposure.

10) Establish relationships

In order to build relationships and create a relevant following across your channels, you need to use social media as an extension of your business.

Have your social media details displayed around your business, on your marketing materials, and on your website and newsletter, so that all of your customers are aware of them, but make sure your content writing is on point or people will simply just not read it.

Most of your customers will have social media accounts, so you should tap into the loyalty of people who regularly use your business; if they support you offline, they will be happy to support you online.
